Q
Hey man! Quick (or long) question, When you where first starting publishing stuff, how did you handle some of the nastier of comments of some of your work? Right now I'm experiencing some of that with my stuff, and while sure, it's easy to respond legitimate criticisms, but sometimes I get stuff like "This is shit, please die" (actual quote), and it sometimes feels like more people hate my stuff more than like it, and its hard to get out of this rump. Got Any suggestions?

First thing you need to realize is this: No matter how poignant, deep, inspired, and philosophical your art is, no matter how brilliant a comment it makes on our lives, our society and our world, and no matter how many people you’ve touched and affected, people are still going to say you’re a hack and hate your guts. It’s incredibly immature of them to hate you as an extension of hating what you make, but they can’t be reasoned with.

I got an email just the other day from a guy telling me he wished I was dead. Personally, I believe anyone who says that haters don’t effect them at all is a liar. If your feelings get hurt, you’re human. My feelings get hurt all the time. My feelings were hurt when people said that DRESS.MOV wasn’t as good as APPLE.MOV.

It’s a matter of not letting your hurt feelings stop you from progressing forward with what you’re making and trying to do. Don’t quit because people hate your guts and want you dead, because then it’s like they win.
